Character's Gender: Male
Appearance: Ian has dark hair, blue eyes and heavy brows, matched with a sharp, stubborn chin. He has skin rather fairer than average owing to the copious amount of time spent indoors in the library or Common Room, avoiding-and resenting-Quidditch and other general outdoor activities. He is of average build and height, but can run with surprising speed when circumstances require.
Character's History: Ian is of British-Gaelic birth. Father Richard Smethwyk was born to a prominent family of pureblood wizards, as a great-nephew of witch Leopoldina Smethwyk, the first British witch to referee a Quidditch match in the late 1900s, and descendant of Elliot Smethwyk, creator of the Cushioning Charm. Mother Brianag Maeve Wallace is Gaelic, and of halfblood lineage. Ian’s parents separated when he was age eight after an unhappy marriage due to father Richard’s increasingly radical views on bloodline lineage. Richard Smethwyk left the family, leaving a resentful Ian and younger sister Isabelle Bria, age 4, with their mother. The remaining family is now estranged from father Richard.
The Smethwyks are related to the Carrows, by Leopoldina Smethwyk, who, besides being grandaunt of Richard Smethwyk, is also grandaunt to Amycus and Alecto Carrow’s mother. As such, Ian and Isabelle have distant- second cousins, twice removed- relations with Amycus and Alecto Carrow, although both parties are unaware of this, due to the Smethwyks’ estrangement with their father.
Character's Personality: Ian is reserved, and is seen as stand-offish as a rule, letting his guard down only to the closest and most trusted of people whom he associates with, including his mother Brianag and-grudgingly- his sister Isabelle. Ian’s middle name, Ceallach, is Gaelic for ‘bright-headed’, no doubt an expression of hope his mother Brianag named him after. He is anal, intelligent, takes pride in self-control, and is sarcastic in the extreme, but cynical, and embittered over the past of his family. He is especially resentful of his father Richard and everything he embodies- Quidditch, his mania on pureblood lineage, and the status he brings which others recognize him first and foremost by. He is identified by the lineage his surname represents by other Wizarding families, and, as a result, is reclusive, with but a few, most trusted friends, mostly in Ravenclaw among the many associates he has within the Hogwarts. Ian is fiercely loyal, though he does not care to, or is able to lucidly reveal and express his emotions under normal conditions, for the people and beliefs he stands by.
Ian’s personal allegiance is to the advantage of his mother and sister, against his father and his radicalism on pureblood lineage. He is well aware of the recruiting and rise of the Dark Lord, but is against joining, though he keeps his ideals to himself. His sense of self-preservation, which he is not conscious of, comes largely from his father, a Slytherin, and who supported anti-muggle ideals.
